10/23/2013 - POST-RACE UPDATE

The Perfect 10 Rogaine : The Perfect Race on a Perfect Day!

What started out as early morning rain, Saturday quickly turned into a BEAUTIFUL fall day in the Missouri Ozarks.   Once again, 36 checkpoints/controls were set across the northern part of the Lake of the Ozarks State Park where 72 Bonk Hard Racers (from 10 states) spent a Perfect 10 hours trying to find as many points as possible.

At 6:45 am sharp, maps were distributed for racers to plan their day's work. Deciding which checkpoints/controls to collect (various point values) and establishing a route plan, teams and solos worked on their strategy and filed their Intention sheets. By 8:00 am, the official race start, all solos and teams were ready to head out on a day of discovery.

Just prior to race start, every racer was entered into a drawing for a kuat Vagabond X roof rackJamie Wynne's name came out of the bag! Congratulations!

CPs 10-19 were worth 10 points each, 20-29 were worth 20 points each, and 30-39 were worth 30 points each. CPs 1- 6 were of particular interest as they were 100 points each, however, they were located at the most distant locations on the course, in areas of subtle terrain, and/or significant climb.   Add to that the Big 6 Bonus (find all 100 point CPs) and you would earn 100 bonus points. The day's total possible points were 1300.

Then it was off on foot in several directions from the start. The majority of the racers headed west primarily along a road en route to two closely spaced 100 pointers out on a long peninsula.   A few chose to go south and a few northeast.   Once off the roads, the crowd dispersed into the vast forest land.   Natural water sources were limited on the course so 4 water points were established (compliments of Bridal Cave) for racers to refill their supply.   Based on water usage at the points along the course, it appears many went in a clockwise direction.   Food was also made available all afternoon at the HQ/Hash House and there were several takers due to the HQ's central location.   As the day wore on, the sun shone brightly highlighting the fall colors.

Racers started arriving in large numbers after 5:30 pm right up until the 6:00 pm cutoff time.   Once finished, racers were treated to a hearty meal and drinks.   The Butcher Shop in Camdenton, MO not only supplied our Mid-Race chili and mac & cheese, they also provided the Post-Race meal of BBQ brisket, BBQ chicken, and cheesy potatoes. Thank you, Chris!

Just prior to the awards ceremony, it was Bob Jenkins who let out that yelp of joy when his name was selected as the winner of the Tan-Tar-A Resort  deluxe weekend package! Congratulations!

The final results revealed Alpine Shop Lite - Emily Korsch and David Frei, finishing first overall with 1240 points, followed closely by second place team Team Fusion - Diane Diebold and Jason Bettis with 1220 points, then Off The Front Racing racer, Zdenek Palecek, in third place overall with 1180 points.
